Scholarship FAQs

What is the ClexaCon Scholarship Fund?

The ClexaCon Scholarship Fund will raise money to help offset some of the travel expenses for panelists and attendees who otherwise could not afford to attend ClexaCon 2018.

Why is there a ClexaCon Scholarship Fund?

The ClexaCon Scholarship Fund is designed to assist members of our community who might not otherwise be able to attend due to financial hardship. We have heard from individuals that would like to help those who are unable to fund their own way. The Scholarship Fund is a way to pool many small donations in order to help the most people.

How will ClexaCon decide who receives financial support?

The ClexaCon Scholarship Committee is a three-woman team who will independently review all scholarship submissions and decide winners. This committee will be led by our Scholarship Coordinator, Ashlye Chaney.

How can I donate?

Click here to make a donation. No donation is too small!

Why should I donate?

Whether you have a little to give or a lot, this is a great way to help ensure that as many people as possible are able to attend and experience the safe, welcoming spirit that is ClexaCon. While it may seem as though donating $5 is not much, small amounts add up and we will be able to help a lot of people attend who otherwise would not have the chance.

What do I get for donating?

Knowing that you are helping others get to enjoy the community and excitement of ClexaCon! Also, if you donate $20 or more, you can be listed in the program as a donor. When making a donation, you can choose to remain anonymous or let us know how you would like to be listed.

Is my donation tax-deductible?

Unfortunately, your donation is not tax-deductible.

What does it cost to help someone attend the convention?

Costs vary greatly due to where scholarship recipients are located. Until the scholarship committee makes its decisions, we will not be able to give an average cost. However, we will be working with Las Vegas hotels to secure the best deals on accommodation to ensure monies raised will go as far as possible, to help as many people as possible.

What if I want my friend/Twitter mutual to get my specific donation?

If you want to help a friend directly, please consider donating directly to that person.

I’d like to help cover the full costs for someone to attend. How can I go about doing that?

Please email scholarships@clexacon.com, if this is something you would like to do. We would love to set up a full scholarship in your name or anonymously.

I would like to make a donation in someone’s name or set up a recurring scholarship. Who should I contact?

Please email scholarships@clexacon.com. We would love to help you with this.

How will we know that all the money is being used the way you say? What kind of transparency will there be about the money that is raised?

With the permission of scholarship recipients, we aim to print the names and photos of winners in our 2018 program, though recipients can choose to remain unlisted. At the conclusion of the fundraising drive and after all scholarship winners have received their allocated financial assistance, we will publicly disclose the total amount raised and given to recipients. All monies raised will be awarded for ClexaCon 2018. If any funds are unclaimed by recipients, it will be directed to other applicants if possible or donated to the True Colors Fund.

If I donate money, will you tell me who that money is helping?

All funds raised will go into a pool that will be used to fund travel and/or accommodation for scholarship recipients selected by our committee. Unless you contact us to set up a scholarship to fully fund an attendee, we will not be able to specify exactly who you have helped.

How much financial support will you be giving to each person who receives a scholarship?

Scholarship amounts will vary depending on several factors including how much money is raised, how many people apply for scholarships and the location and circumstances of scholarship winners.

Who can apply for a scholarship?

Panelists, filmmakers, attendees and anyone who wants to attend ClexaCon but cannot afford to, should apply. The application form and directions are here.

I want to apply for a scholarship. What do I need to do?

Please visit the application page, use the form to submit a 500-700-word essay describing why you want to attend ClexaCon 2018. We want to hear your story and how much of a difference attending ClexaCon 2018 could make to you. More information about applying is available here.

How will I know if I am receiving a scholarship?

You will receive an email directly from the scholarship committee.

When will I know if I am receiving a scholarship?

Scholarship applications will be accepted and reviewed throughout the year. We will let you know when we have reviewed your application and a decision has been made. We will begin advising recipients by 10/1/2017.

What are the YouCaring fees? If I donate $100, how much will actually go to help people attend ClexaCon?

YouCaring charges 3% for every donation that is processed. This includes a credit card processing fee. We chose YouCaring because they have the lowest fees so as much as possible of your donation will be passed on to scholarship winners.
